If you’re looking to maximize your human capital, you might be interested in the TWI on The Job Training method. But what is it exactly, and how can your company benefit from it?

What Is TWI on the Job Training Method?

To understand the TWI on The Job Training method, it’s helpful to first look at what TWI is. TWI stands for Training Within Industry, a service that was created in 1940 by the U.S. Department of War.

While manufacturers were working at full clip to fulfill the orders coming from the government to supply the war effort, there was a dramatic shortage of labor due to the draft, which meant that many men of working age were enlisted. To make up for this labor shortage, women and young men were recruited to work in the factories — but they didn’t yet possess the required skills.

To help manufacturers quickly acquire a competent workforce, the TWI service provided education for the experienced employees who remained in the factories, training them in three essential skills: how to instruct new employees, how to continuously improve production methods and how to provide strong leadership to employees. Interestingly, the TWI method was so successful that after the end of WWII, it was adopted in Japan, where companies like Toyota utilized it to develop their highly efficient production methods.

As a foundation for continuous improvement programs like LEAN Manufacturing and Six Sigma, Job Methods — or TWI on The Job Training method — is an effective way to standardize the work in your business while at the same time developing the management skills of your more experienced operators and line leaders.

By encouraging employees to analyze the individual parts of their work in a systematic manner using a job breakdown sheet, you can simplify complex processes and break them down into to step-by-step activities that are relatively easy to learn. At the same time, you can minimize human error because each step is thoroughly examined so that even the smallest action can be properly explained. Finally, this method facilitates continuous improvement, because when every employee involved in a process understands the effectiveness of its steps, they’re more likely to have feedback regarding how to improve those steps to enhance efficiency.
