Introduction to Geometric Dimensions & Tolerances (GD&T)

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is the technical “language” that controls form, fit, and function on engineering drawings. This introductory course provides participants with a practical working knowledge of GD&T, enabling them to correctly interpret prints, communicate requirements, and support quality, manufacturing, and engineering decisions.

This introductory Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) course provides a straightforward, practical foundation in understanding the symbolic language used on today’s engineering drawings. Participants learn how to correctly interpret GD&T symbols, read feature control frames, and understand how geometric tolerances affect manufacturing, inspection, and quality.

This training is ideal for anyone who reads, interprets, or works directly from engineering prints.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Explain what GD&T is and why it is used in modern manufacturing
  • Recognize and define the 14 standard geometric control symbols
  • Understand the tolerance zone shapes associated with each symbol
  • Read and interpret feature control frames on engineering drawings
  • Identify and apply the three material condition modifiers (MMC, LMC, RFS) at a basic level
  • Understand the basics of datums and datum reference frames
  • Recognize how GD&T impacts function, inspection, and cost
  • Identify where additional learning is needed using a short end-of-course self-graded exam
