Welcome to our “Manufacturing U” Program

MFG UManufacturing U (MFG U) is an intensive two-week journey into the world of applied engineering and technology designed for rising high school seniors interested in STEM. If you find joy in solving puzzles, fixing things, or creating something from nothing, and you’ve wondered, “Can I get paid to do this?”—you’re in the right place!

Our program, hosted at Universities in our nine-county coverage area, brings together MANTEC staff, university professionals, private sector consultants, and manufacturing industry volunteers to create a unique experience. Notably, we aim to cater to economically disadvantaged students, making this opportunity accessible to all.

The “MFG U” is more than just a career exploration initiative; it’s a holistic approach to personal and professional development. We understand that self-awareness is a key ingredient for career success, often overlooked in traditional programs. That’s why our curriculum includes dedicated time for self-reflection and integration, allowing students to connect what they learn about manufacturing careers with their personal aspirations.

Our program’s goals are ambitious, aiming to:

  • Increase access to STEM education for underrepresented groups.
  • Impact academic performance through critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Develop self-awareness by encouraging students to explore their interests, strengths, motivators, and values.
  • Foster leadership skills through collaborative projects and teamwork.
  • Increase awareness and interest in manufacturing careers by encouraging creative thinking and innovative solutions.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion, creating a welcoming environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Build community partnerships, fostering collaboration between local businesses, organizations, and universities.

The hands-on projects within the program include self-assessment using ADVanced Insights® DiSC profiles, career exploration, and soft skills training, technical training in areas like CAD and metallic processing, facility tours to witness real-world manufacturing operations, job shadowing opportunities, and self-paced learning with SME’s ToolingU for an industry-recognized credential.

Moreover, participants will engage in a Ropes Course Challenge, a unique experience designed for individual and group skill development. The program also includes an introduction to college life with a campus tour and Q&A session.

To achieve our objectives, we’ve outlined key milestones, from developing a comprehensive curriculum to conducting thorough evaluations and feedback sessions. We’re committed to creating an enriching experience that not only broadens horizons but also leaves a lasting impact on each participant.
