To understand why LEAN manufacturing consulting makes so much sense for small- to medium-sized businesses in Pennsylvania, it helps to have a clear picture of the origins of the LEAN methodology and what that means in the hands of a skilled business consultancy like MANTEC.

Clearly, with the potential to reduce waste, streamline processes, improve quality and better utilize assets, LEAN manufacturing consulting is a topic worth exploring in order to recognize the principles it’s based upon.

The Origins of LEAN Manufacturing

About 75 years prior to LEAN being first officially coined as a manufacturing methodology, Henry Ford had his finger squarely on the pulse of the LEAN movement when he was quoted in the 1915 book, “The Story of Henry Ford,” saying, “We can attack waste with a definite objective. We will not put into our establishment anything that is useless.”

Staying in the automotive industry, we can jump ahead to the 1990s, when, derived from the Toyota Production System — or TPS — the LEAN manufacturing methodology was first introduced as a way of constantly reducing “muda,” or “waste,” as well as improving process efficiency by eliminating “mura,” or “unevenness.”

When you take the approaches of LEAN in sum total, the advantage to manufacturing companies is significant. LEAN offers a way to continuously improve processes and workflows while simultaneously delivering products to distributors and customers with shorter lead times.

In addition, since the manufacturing sector has now entered into Industry 4.0 and is currently impacted by the Internet of Things (IoT) and automation, LEAN is one of the few methodologies that can continue to develop and keep pace with the manufacturing sector as it undergoes major disruptive changes.
