Engineers of the Future
MANTEC was proud to sponsor the Annunciation BVM school in McSherrystown for 3 Lego League teams.
For children ages 6-9, Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®) captures young children’s curiosity and directs it toward discovering the wonders of science and technology. This program features a real-world scientific concept to be explored through research, teamwork, construction, and imagination. Guided by adult Coaches, teams use LEGO® bricks to build a model that moves and develop a Show Me Poster to illustrate their journey. (https://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/jr.fll)
The two teams addressed a problem we have seen too often in recent year- a hurricane striking land. The teams built a model of a town after it was destroyed. One solved electricity problems through a bike powered generator. Another had a helicopter to make sure everyone was flown to safety.
FIRST LEGO League is a robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds , which is designed to get children excited about science and technology — and teach them valuable employment and life skills. (https://www.firstlegoleague.org/mission/support) The team had to work together to build a robot and perform missions after Nature’s Fury. One example was pushing a car to safety.
The teams were showcased in the STEM fair at the end of February. The teams took a field trip to share their experiences and learn from the York Country Day School teams. While the younger kids still want to be sports heros, there were a few in the older class that identified engineering as a career opportunity. The teams learned important life skills of working with a team and solving problems.
